Hello There!, Over the last 10 years I have learned (the hard way) things about my computer and the Internet. I was no techie! I did not speak or understand Techie Speech whatsoever!
But I was not dumb, and wished I knew someone back then who could just explain things in a way I could understand!
(Can I get an "I hear that Dawn!")
My family & friends have FINALLY been getting into
the computer age the last couple of years, and guess what? LOL, I am now the person to them, that I wish I had over the years! I don't know everything by far, but I know enough to inform them a lot faster than if they had
to do it like I did.
I figure there are more of you out there like us, who might appreciate some of the things I'm about to pass on,
So I might as well get it all down in writing now, so I can just say go here and call me later!
(Some days I am on the phone for hours getting my sister through all the same crap I just went through with my best friend the day before grrr... LOL)
Like I said, I'm not a techie so please over look my
grammar!

Lets start with this:
You don't have to spend an arm and a leg to protect your computer!
There are FREE!, very reputable, and easy to use websites out there that will walk you through some very important things! Below Is one that I think EVERYONE should start with. (I do NOT get anything for referring these sites! that's how GREAT I think they are!)

Shields Up!
https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
(scans on site, no downloading)
(The first two boxes are ads. Start at the 3rd box)
This is my favorite site!
To me, It's as Important as an anti-virus! It scans your computer like a hacker would, to look for open back door ports. When I did this for the first time years ago I had 4 open ports!
I am now totally what they call in "stealth." invisible to hackers. They have to get you from more obvious ways now. Like opening an infected email, clicking a link that tricks you into thinking its something else, downloading something from a site that includes spyware. (usually harmless spyware) but some can cause annoying problems.
All the popular messengers have some sort of spyware, but not malicious. Most spyware is just to know your surfing habits so they can post ads on their pages to your liking.
Sites like MySpace and the like however, have tons of people in there just wanting to be your "friend" for no good reason, (at least for you its not good ;-) and when you click on the person to see who it is, you give permission for them to send you crap,
Like porno!
Hundreds of pages pop up all at once and you cant stop it! Just ask my son! OHH I'm sure, "It was just an accident" (rolls eyes) ;-)
LOL, BUT Its true, it's happen to me also.
That stuff has crap in it that stays in your computer, stops some things from working properly, so they can continue to put crap in it.
Have you ever received an email, telling you your email was undeliverable? an email that you didn't even send?? Well someone was able to get crap in your computer that allows them access to your email to send all their spam so they don't get busted!
These things aren't considered a virus so your anti virus doesn't usually flag them.
That's where some of the other sites I use come in. I will add those in future posts.

Symantec Threat explorer:
http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/security_response/threatexplorer/azlisting.jsp
Great site!
Look up what some of your spyware and anti-virus' tell you they found, but cant remove. Tells you how and what each one does inside your computer to screw it up, and how to get rid of it... It has A lot of other things in there also...I learned a lot going through it. There is a free ON SITE (No download) scanner there, that will remove some of them right away.

PC Pit Stop:
http://www.pcpitstop.com/
(on site scan)
An Awesome site! Checks your computer just like going to a service station! Back when I first used it, it was more for computer performance, to keep it running smoothly. Things like:
best settings & fixes for dialup users to improve speed of browsing.
hardware you should look into because of computer age, that could greatly improve computer performance,
Now It has lots more you can use and do!

Well that's it for this post, Like I said I'm no techie so this took me forever LOL! I will add to this Later.
Good luck to you, Thanks for taking your time to read me
